The Blue Lagoon is a sea destination, and that means the answer to "when should I go?" really comes down to sea temperature, crowd density, and weather windows. Here's the honest breakdown.

Blue Lagoon Krknjaši in peak summer with turquoise water under a clear Mediterranean sky
Peak conditions at the Blue Lagoon — typically July through early September.

May — early-season, quiet, cool water

Sea temperature: 17–19°C. Air: 18–24°C. Most days are sunny, the bora wind has settled, and the Lagoon will have 3–5 boats at most. Lunch on deck in the sun is genuinely pleasant. The water is bracing but swimmable — most guests get in for 5–10 minutes and come out shivering and happy. Recommended for travelers who hate crowds.

June — sweet spot begins

Sea: 21–23°C. Air: 24–28°C. By mid-June the sea is warm enough to spend an hour in. Crowds pick up but the Lagoon is still pleasant. This is when most locals recommend going.

July — warm and busy

Sea: 24–26°C. Air: 28–32°C. Peak crowds. The Lagoon will host 20–30 boats between 11:00 and 14:00. The water is perfect, but you'll be sharing it. Book at least 2 weeks ahead.

August — peak chaos

Sea: 25–27°C. Air: 28–34°C. Hottest month, busiest month. The Lagoon at noon can feel like a marina. We recommend earlier departures (we leave at 09:00 from Stobreč, which puts us at the Lagoon by 10:30 before the bulk of speedboats arrive). Book 3+ weeks in advance.

September — locals' favourite

Sea: 23–25°C. Air: 24–30°C. The water is still summer-warm but the schools are back so the crowds thin dramatically. Sunlight is softer and photographs come out better. Easily the best month if you can choose.

October — last call

Sea: 20–22°C. Air: 18–24°C. Quiet, beautiful, sometimes a bit windy. We run tours until the last week of October, weather permitting. Sea is still swimmable for most people.

When NOT to go

November through April. The water is too cold, the weather is unreliable, and most tour operators (including us) are closed. The Lagoon is still there — but unless you have your own boat and waterproof gear, save the trip for the warm months.

Avoiding crowds — tactical tips

  • Pick an early departure. We're at the Lagoon by 10:30; speedboats from Split usually arrive 11:30–12:00.
  • Avoid August school holidays (especially the first three weeks of August).
  • Tuesdays and Wednesdays are slightly quieter than weekends and Mondays.
  • Look for slow-day operators. Speedboat tours pack in 20–25 people; traditional wooden boats like ours carry 30–80 but stay much longer at each stop, so you're not rushed.

If you've picked your month, see our full-day Blue Lagoon tour for daily availability and pricing.
