The two most-booked day trips from Split — the Blue Lagoon and Krka National Park — are completely different products. They share almost nothing except "famous Croatian water" and similar price points. Here's the straight comparison to help you choose.

The fundamental difference
Blue Lagoon = a boat day. You sit on a boat, swim twice, eat lunch on board, return.
Krka = a walking day. You take a bus to the park entrance, walk along wooden boardwalks past waterfalls, optionally swim in a designated area, return.
Different activity types, different muscle groups, different expectations. People who love one don't always love the other.
Travel logistics
| Blue Lagoon | Krka National Park | |
|---|---|---|
| Distance from Split | 12 nautical miles by sea | 90 km by road (Skradin entrance) |
| Travel time | 90 min boat each way | 1h driving each way |
| How you arrive | Boat anchors near the bay | Bus drops at Skradin, then short shuttle boat to park entrance |
| On-day movement | Mostly sitting/swimming | Mostly walking (3–6 km of boardwalk) |
What you actually do
At the Blue Lagoon
- Swim and snorkel in shallow turquoise water (60–90 min)
- Eat lunch on board the boat
- Second swim stop at Nečujam Bay on Šolta
- Sun deck downtime between activities
At Krka
- Walk the wooden boardwalk loop past the Skradinski Buk falls (1.5–2 hours)
- Optionally take an additional boat to Visovac Island (1–1.5 hours)
- Swim near (not in) the main falls — only a designated area on the side
- Visit ethnographic exhibits (old mills, traditional craftsmen)
- Lunch independently at the park restaurant or pack your own
Cost comparison
| Blue Lagoon | Krka | |
|---|---|---|
| Group tour from Split | €55–110/person | €55–85/person |
| Park entrance fee | N/A | €35–40/adult in peak season |
| Lunch included | Usually yes | Usually no |
| Total day cost | €55–110 | €90–125 (tour + entry + lunch) |
Krka's hidden cost is the park entrance fee, which has roughly doubled in the last few years. Many travelers book a "tour" expecting it to include entry, then discover at the gate that they pay separately.
Crowds
Both destinations are heavily visited. Krka's main boardwalk can be uncomfortably packed in July/August — at peak times you'll walk slowly behind crowds with limited overtaking opportunities. The Blue Lagoon spreads its crowds across a wider water area, so it feels less claustrophobic even when 20+ boats are anchored.
For families with small kids or anyone sensitive to crowds, the Blue Lagoon's water-based crowd is less stressful than Krka's boardwalk crowd.
Best time of year
Blue Lagoon: late June to early October (water temperature is the constraint).
Krka: April to October, but May/June is best — the waterfalls have most water and the heat isn't yet oppressive. By August the falls have lower flow and the heat on the boardwalks is brutal.
Which suits which traveler
Pick the Blue Lagoon if:
- You want to swim — actually swim, for hours
- You're travelling with kids who'll struggle with long walks
- You like a "boat day" with downtime
- You want to be on the open sea, not in a park
- The weather is hot (you'll get heat relief on the water)
Pick Krka if:
- You prefer landscape photography to swim photography
- You enjoy walking and want to "see things" rather than relax
- You're a freshwater swimmer (Krka's water is colder and fresh, not salt)
- You want a destination with cultural/historical elements (mills, exhibits)
- You're sensitive to motion sickness (no boat ride to worry about)
Can you do both?
Yes, on separate days. They're not on the same route — Krka is north, the Blue Lagoon is south-south-west. Some tour operators offer a "combined" 2-day package, but back-to-back full-day excursions are demanding. Most multi-day Split visitors split them across separate days with a rest day in between.
The honest verdict
If you only have time for one, pick based on your travel personality. Swimming-and-relaxing travelers → Blue Lagoon. Walking-and-seeing travelers → Krka. They're both excellent at what they are; they're just not substitutes for each other.
