How to avoid the crowds at the Blue Lagoon

5 min read

The Blue Lagoon's biggest issue isn't the water — it's the other boats. In peak season (mid-July to late August) the bay can host 30+ boats at the same time, and the postcard "empty turquoise paradise" experience is the exception, not the rule. Here's how to engineer a quieter visit.

The Blue Lagoon Krknjaši on a quieter morning with only a few boats anchored in the bay
The Lagoon early in the morning — before the bulk of speedboat tours arrive around 11:30.

Timing: the single biggest factor

The crowd at the Blue Lagoon follows a predictable schedule. Speedboat tours from Split take 45 minutes to reach the bay; most depart between 09:30 and 10:30, putting them at the Lagoon by 11:00–11:30. Traditional boat tours from Stobreč take 90 minutes but depart at 09:00, putting them at the Lagoon by 10:30.

The result is a strong rush between 11:30 and 14:00. Before 11:00 and after 14:30, the bay is significantly quieter.

Two ways to play the timing

  1. Be there first. Book a 09:00 departure from Stobreč (like ours) — you'll arrive at the Lagoon around 10:30, when only 4–6 boats are there. You get the full 60–90 minute window of quiet before the speedboat crowd arrives.
  2. Be there last. Some specialty operators run afternoon-only "sunset" tours that arrive at 15:00 when most day tours are leaving. The Lagoon at 16:00–17:00 is nearly empty again. See our sunset tour guide for details.

Best months for the Blue Lagoon without crowds

MonthCrowd levelWater temp
MayVery low (3–5 boats)17–19°C (chilly)
Early JuneLow (5–10)20–22°C (swimmable)
Late JuneModerate (10–15)22–24°C
JulyHigh (20–30)24–26°C
AugustPeak (30+)25–27°C
Early SeptemberHigh (20–25)24–26°C
Mid–late SeptemberModerate (10–15)22–24°C
OctoberLow (3–8)20–22°C

The best balance of warm water + low crowds is mid-to-late September. The schools are back so families are gone, the water is still summer-warm, and most operators have scaled back to fewer daily departures.

Day of week matters more than people think

Tuesdays and Wednesdays are noticeably quieter than weekends and Mondays. Weekend visitors are often families on short trips; Mondays catch the "first day of the holiday" wave; mid-week tends to be repeat visitors and longer-stay travelers — less concentrated in a single time slot.

If you have the choice, book Tuesday or Wednesday. The same tour with the same operator can feel like a different experience.

Which tour types stay quieter

Traditional wooden boats (larger boats, fewer stops)

Large traditional boats carry 30–80 guests but stay much longer at each stop. Once you're swimming, there's no schedule rush. Crowd density at the swim spot is the same as on speedboats, but your experience of the day is calmer.

Private speedboat charters

You control your own schedule. Arrive at 09:00 sharp; leave by 11:00 when the crowds peak; reroute to a different cove. Expensive (€600+ per day) but the most reliable way to control your environment.

Private traditional boat charter

Same logic as above but on a 20-metre wooden boat for up to 80 guests, often cheaper per person for larger groups. See our private Blue Lagoon charter page for what that looks like.

Multi-day liveaboards

Small sailing boats that stay overnight in the Lagoon. They get the early-morning empty-bay shot at dawn before any day-tour boats arrive. Niche, expensive, but unmatched.

What NOT to book

Avoid party/booze cruises that explicitly target the 11:00–14:00 peak window with maximum stops per day. These tours are built to compete on quantity, which means they all arrive at the Lagoon at the same time.

Alternative spots if the Lagoon looks full

On peak days when our captain sees the Lagoon is over-busy, we sometimes anchor at the smaller cove behind Mali Krknjaš — a 200-meter swim from the main Lagoon, much less popular because most tours can't enter (too shallow for speedboats). It's slightly less photogenic but the water quality is identical, and you'll have it nearly to yourself.

Other nearby quiet alternatives:

  • Stračinska Bay (Šolta, 15 min cruise from the Lagoon) — sheltered, sandy, rarely on tour itineraries
  • Maslinica (Šolta, west side) — small fishing village with two nearby swim coves

Tactical summary

  • Book a 09:00 departure from Stobreč Harbor (not Split Port, which boards 45 min later)
  • Aim for early June, late September, or early October if dates are flexible
  • Pick a Tuesday or Wednesday
  • Choose a traditional wooden boat over a speedboat for a calmer day
  • Ask your captain about the Mali Krknjaš alternative if the main Lagoon is crowded
