Speedboat vs traditional boat

Blue Lagoon speedboat tour from Split — or is a traditional wooden boat the smarter choice?

Speedboats reach the Blue Lagoon faster. Our 20-metre traditional wooden boat — a repurposed Dalmatian fishing boat — gives you more swim time, lunch on deck, a wooden deck under bare feet, and a calmer day on the water. Here is the honest comparison so you can pick what fits.

First — what we actually run

We are not a speedboat operator. Our boat is a 20-metre traditional wooden Dalmatian vessel — originally a working commercial fishing boat that Captain Marin ran for fifteen years, now converted with a covered deck, sun loungers, and a galley that serves a hot lunch. We are listing this page because many travellers search for "Blue Lagoon speedboat tour" and then end up choosing a traditional tour once they see the comparison. If a speedboat is right for you, that is fine — book one. If after reading this you think a slower, calmer boat fits your day better, our 09:00 departure from Stobreč Harbor is below.

Where speedboats win

  • Faster transit. 45 minutes from Split to the Lagoon vs 90 minutes on a traditional boat. If your travel time on board is "wasted" in your mind, speedboats save you 90 minutes round-trip.
  • More stops per day. Most speedboats fit 4–5 stops (Blue Lagoon, Maslinica, sea caves, Trogir) into a single day. Traditional boats usually do 2 (Blue Lagoon + Nečujam).
  • Smaller groups. Speedboats carry 6–12 people, so the on-water experience is more intimate.
  • Optional sea-cave access. Speedboats can enter narrow sea caves a 20-metre wooden boat cannot reach.

Where speedboats lose

  • Less swim time at the Blue Lagoon. A typical speedboat itinerary gives you 30–45 minutes at the Lagoon — enough for a photo and a quick dip. Our traditional tour gives you 60–90 minutes plus a second swim at Nečujam.
  • Lunch is rarely included. Speedboats stop at restaurants where you pay extra. Our boat includes a hot grilled lunch (chicken, fish, or pasta) on deck.
  • Rougher ride. Speedboats slam against waves; in 2–3 ft chop the crossing is wet and bouncy. Our 20-tonne wooden hull cuts through the same chop smoothly. If you get seasick easily, this matters.
  • Sun and shade are limited. Most speedboats have a small bimini and no covered seating area. Our wooden boat has a fully covered saloon, sun deck, shaded seating, and a bathroom.
  • Hot decks under bare feet. In July, a fiberglass or aluminium speedboat deck under bare feet gets hot enough to flinch. Our oiled-wood deck stays warm but never burns — you walk barefoot all day, even at midday. Same with the benches: wood breathes, plastic and metal cook.
  • Almost double the price. Group speedboat tours run €90–130 per adult. Our full-day traditional boat tour is €55 per adult, lunch included.
  • Less family-friendly. The spray, the noise, and the lack of shade make a speedboat day rough on small children or older travellers. Families consistently rate the wooden boat higher.

Who should book a speedboat anyway

A speedboat is the right choice if you want to see as many spots as possible in a day, you are an active group without kids, and you do not mind paying double for a faster, louder, wetter experience. Search for "Blue Lagoon speedboat Split" on GetYourGuide or Viator — there are 20+ operators.

Who should book our traditional tour

Pick the traditional wooden boat if you want a calm day on the water, hours of swim time at the Blue Lagoon (not minutes), lunch on board without extra cost, and a smoother ride on the way out. Most of our guests are couples, families, and travellers who treat the boat itself as part of the experience rather than "transit time".
