Blue Lagoon from Kaštela: the closest mainland base

4 min read

Kaštela — the seven historic towns along Kaštela Bay between Split and Trogir — is one of the under-the-radar bases for Blue Lagoon visitors. You're closer than people staying in Split, and the transport options are surprisingly good.

Most Kaštela visitors board the Blue Lagoon tour at Stobreč Harbor — a 25-minute drive.

Why Kaštela is well-positioned

The seven Kaštela towns (Kaštel Štafilić, Novi, Stari, Lukšić, Kambelovac, Gomilica, Sućurac) sit on the north coast of Kaštela Bay, with Split's airport (SPU) right between them. By sea, the Blue Lagoon is 14 nautical miles south. By road to Stobreč Harbor (the main Blue Lagoon departure point) it's just 22–27 km depending which Kaštela town you're in — about 25–35 minutes driving.

Three options to reach the Blue Lagoon

1. Drive/taxi to Stobreč Harbor (recommended)

The straight shot. From most Kaštela accommodations to Stobreč is 25–35 minutes via the D8 or the A1 highway exit "Solin".

  • Taxi/Uber/Bolt: €25–40 one-way
  • Self-drive: easy, free parking at Stobreč
  • Bus: requires transfer in Split, 75+ minutes total — slower than driving

2. Drive/taxi to Split Port

If you'd rather board in central Split, Kaštela to the Riva is 20–25 km. Free parking is nearly impossible in central Split; pay €3–5/hour at one of the garages. We don't generally recommend this option for Kaštela guests — Stobreč is closer and cheaper to park.

3. Local Kaštela-area boats

A handful of small operators run private charters from Kaštela's marinas (especially Kaštel Gomilica). These are mostly small speedboats — flexible but expensive (€500–900/day for the boat). Worth it for groups of 6+, not for couples.

The simplest plan

  1. Book a Stobreč-departing tour for 09:00
  2. Order a taxi or drive yourself, depart Kaštela by 08:15
  3. Arrive Stobreč by 08:45, board at 09:00
  4. Return 17:00–18:00, drive back to Kaštela in 30 minutes

Why this beats staying in Split for Blue Lagoon access

  • Closer to Stobreč than Split city centre by 5–10 minutes
  • Free parking everywhere in Kaštela (vs €30+/day in Split)
  • Less morning traffic — Kaštela → Stobreč avoids Split's centre
  • Quieter base — Kaštela is residential and calm, while Split is hectic in summer

Kaštela-specific notes

  • Kaštel Sućurac is the closest of the seven to Stobreč Harbor (15 minutes)
  • Kaštel Štafilić is the furthest (35 minutes)
  • The "M5/M6" bus lines run through Kaštela toward Split but don't pass near Stobreč directly
  • If you're flying in/out of Split airport (SPU), you're already in Kaštela — the airport is between Kaštel Štafilić and Kaštel Lukšić
