Nečujam Bay guide: the other swim stop on Šolta

5 min read

If the Blue Lagoon is the headline, Nečujam Bay is the quieter second act. It's the stop on the south side of Šolta Island where most full-day boat tours from Split spend their afternoon — and it's the part of the day many guests end up enjoying most.

Where Nečujam is

Nečujam ("the silent place" in Croatian) is a horseshoe-shaped bay on the north coast of Šolta, about 15 minutes by boat from the Blue Lagoon. The bay is surrounded by pine forests that come right down to the water, with a small year-round village (population ~250) clustered along the inner shore. There are a few cafés, a small market, and a couple of family-run restaurants.

What makes Nečujam different from the Blue Lagoon

The two are often paired but they're nothing alike. The Blue Lagoon is shallow, sandy, and almost cartoonishly turquoise — a quick-stop "wow" destination. Nečujam is deep, pine-rimmed, with cooler greener water and a settled, lived-in feel. You can actually go ashore at Nečujam (the Blue Lagoon islets have nowhere to land), grab a drink at the beach bar, swim in the resort pools right by the water, walk through the pine forest, or just float in the deeper water without other boats around.

What to do during the stop

  • Swim. The bay reaches 10+ meters at the center; visibility is good for snorkeling around the rocky edges.
  • Beach bar by the bay. A short walk from the boat — cold drinks, coffee, and a sea view. Easiest way to spend the lunch break without leaving the waterfront.
  • Swimming pools — especially with kids. There's a small resort right by the bay with swimming pools open to visitors. Kids love them — a break from the salt and the slope of the seabed, plus shallow ends and shaded sun loungers. Often the favourite part of the day for families with under-10s.
  • Walk to the village. About 3 minutes from the boat. Buy fresh bread, ice cream, or postcards.
  • Sun-deck nap. Most guests do this. The boat is shaded, the water is calm, and you've already swum twice today.
  • Try Šolta wine. The island produces a distinctive red called Dobričić, the genetic ancestor of California Zinfandel. The village shop usually has a bottle or two.

How long the stop usually lasts

About 90 minutes to 2 hours. This is also where lunch is served on the boat — grilled chicken, grilled fish, or pasta milanese (chosen at booking) prepared in the small galley while you swim.

History worth knowing

Nečujam was used by the Roman poet Marcus Marulić as a quiet retreat in the 15th century. Ruins of his villa are still visible above the bay. The Romans before him used the bay as a sheltered anchorage on the route between Salona (modern Split) and the southern Dalmatian islands.

Combining the two stops

Our full-day tour visits the Blue Lagoon in the late morning (when the water colour peaks) and Nečujam in the early afternoon (when the heat is high and shade matters). This sequence is deliberate: cool morning swim, scenic lunch in the shade, second afternoon swim, then a relaxed cruise back to Split.
